Watching Hare's box in the spring is one of the great sights of the countryside. Boxing hares are usually the female fending off the advances of a male hare. Hares do not dig or live in burrows, but tuck themselves into shallow dips, usually in fields or in long grass, known as forms. In the winter they will move into woods for additional shelter. Brown Hares are adapted to living in open habitat and are incredibly fast runners. In Scotland you also will find white hares above the snow line. Hares feed mainly on grasses and herbs or crops. Although they are predominately nocturnal, they can be active well into the mornings and evenings during summer. Hares are usually born between February and October with three litters of 1-4 young called leverets. |
