Larks are small to medium sized birds and have an elaborate call which is often sung in flight. With these very lovely songs, males defend their territories and attract the female larks. They usually build nests on the ground but some also build them low down in bushes. Larks eggs are usually speckled. Like many other ground birds, most types of lark have long hind claws providing stability while standing. They feed on insects and seeds. Perhaps the most exciting Lark to hear or see in Scotland is the Skylark. The Skylark is around 17cm long living in open farmland and heath. The magnificent song comes from the male whilst he may be flying at 100 feet above you. The song generally lasts 2 to 3 minutes. The male has broader wings than the female which helps him to hover whilst singing.
