The House Sparrow is the only Sparrow found in Scotland. They feed usually on the ground, eating seeds, buds, roots, berries and many insects for the young. They used to flock in hundreds but numbers have declined. They nest in cavities such as in roots or eves of a house. It is possible that modern building methods have contributed to the decline by not providing the nooks and crannies that they have previously nested in. The nests are usually very messy. Sparrows are noisy and gregarious with close associations with man. They will explore any rubbish and even eat garden flowers. Their numbers are declining. You can see them in the centre of Scottish cities through to the countryside. Sparrows feed and breed near to people. They are absent from most parts of the Scottish Highlands and rare in upland areas or in the Islands. |
